These are turned back into raw materials to make new, durable products and packaging. When you register, you specify the panels that you want installed. Then all the requirements are bundled together and verified installers bid for the work. After the auction, you get receive a personally recommendation and quote. Then it’s up to you to decide whether you want to commit to the quote. There’s no obligation to commit to anything until after the auction has taken place and you make your decision. The idea is that a larger bulk of work will lead to lower prices for consumers. The book is blissfully free of jargon; clearly a lot of effort has been made to make it a good, clear read. It looks at the 5 areas that need to be addressed: restoring nature, reviving the oceans, cleaning the air, eliminating waste and fixing the climate. And it’s full of stories of people making real progress all over the world. They aren’t all famous people in big institutions either – they’re ordinary people and communities (just like ours) that just refuse to take the lazy option of despair. That means: the Village Hall which, with the hall itself, showers and the social club, has a big carbon footprint. But we are lucky because John Treble, a village resident who has been in sustainability since the 1980s (and who suggested the Vertically Integrated Project) followed his good idea with a good deed: he persuaded his colleague Andy Snipe, an energy consultant, to visit the hall to see what can be done to reduce its energy consumption and transition towards green power. This won’t be a simple task; there are lots of options, considerations – and financial implications. But Andy has generously donated his time and expertise for free. In the months ahead, Farrington Green will keep you posted about the ideas that emerge. We will need your help – fundraising is inevitable – but this hall was built in the 1990s by the people who lived here. There are cages for it just behind the check-out tills. We’ve written to BANES asking if they could start collecting it with the rest of our recycling and will let you know what happens. Apparently the TESCO soft plastics are sent to Spain for recycling, which isn’t ideal but at least it isn’t going to landfill. PLASTIC TAX In April, a new tax on plastic comes into force. It’s aimed at businesses and requires that any imports wrapped in plastic must consist of 30 percent recycled plastic. That’s to encourage more usage of recycled materials. A psychologist and environmental scientist, she runs the Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations (CAST). Her research shows that almost 60% of the measures to teach our UK carbon targets will require at least some change in consumer behavior. By 2030, our average carbon footprint has to go from 8.5 tonnes to 2.5 tonnes, which is quite a diet There are many ways to get there: insulating houses better, using public transport more, wasting less and so on. But a big part of the equation will involve food, a topic that aroused a lot of interest and enthusiasm at the village hall meeting last month. They are all doing okay but, being young, they need some love and attention. April Totham noticed that grass is growing around their base, and that grass takes water and nutrients away from the trees, which they really need at this early stage of their lives. So she came up with a brilliant idea ADOPT A TREE Would you like to adopt one of our young trees and just keep an eye on it? Clear any grass, make sure that, if it hasn’t rained for awhile, it gets a drink and ask for help if you think it’s poorly. It’s not a lot of work, it could be fun and educational for your young ones too. If you would like to adopt a tree, please email FarringtonGreen. Trees will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, so the earlier you respond, the more choice you have. If we have too many volunteers, late arrivals will be put on a waiting list; they’ll get a tree when we plant more or when existing volunteers need a break.
